E46 OEM M3 KATLANABİLİR AYNALAR

ONTO FACELIFT CONVERTIBLE  WITH RIBBON CABLES

First a respray , painting the base plate in gloss black so it matches in with the shadow trim as the original mirror did , this matches in much better than the all one colour look that the OEM M3 mirrors come in as standard

The standard e46 mirror beside the M3 mirror ready for the motor swap

The standard e46 mirror stripped down , there's just 4 clips under the mirror glass holding the back cover on and a series of if philips head screws holding the black front cover on . Then 3 screws going through the motor holding it in place . You will need to remove the plugs from the end of the ribbon cable to thread it out of the base plate , by pushing the little metal tabs visible in the plugs with a jewellers screwdriver the plugs can slide off

Next the M3 mirror , much the same just a series of  TORX screws to remove . Once the motor is off it just unplugs from the main loom

Continue removing all the screws until you get the main motor mounting bracket out , at this point the plug at the end of the loom needs removing again by pushing the little metal tabs visible in the plug with a jewellers screwdriver so that the loom can be removed through the base plate and mirror housing

Next unwrap the loom and strip away all the wires except the blue and white these are the 2 needed for the folding function

Now the ribbon cable motor can be transplanted into the M3 housing . Note the original M3 motor sat on the black plastic part in the top of the picture , after many hours trial and error I could not find a way to get the ribbon motor to mount up securely on there . I found that the best compromise was to discard the black plastic part and mount the ribbon motor directly onto main motor bracket

This bit is very much trial and error finding the exact position for the motor to sit . I used strong double sided tape to try the motor in position , mount it back up in the housing and put the glass on to see what the position was like and make adjustments from there

Once a perfect position is found the motor can be screwed straight through the plate its sat on by drilling holes and using self tappers through the original screw holes in the motor and secured from behind with speed clips in this case.

With the motor secured screw everything back into place , run the ribbon cable round the back and through the hole where the white and blue wires are . Fit the glass , base plate and plugs and you have functioning M3 mirrors with ribbon cables .

The mirror glass will sit a little deeper in the housing than it did originally due to not using the black plastic mounting piece , but that doesn't affect anything

FOLDING FUNCTION

The blue and white wires your left with are for the fold function , there is no way to connect to a genuine M3 mirror switch (believe me , I've killed 2 trying)

When the blue wire is given a live 12v feed and the white a negative feed the mirrors will fold up , to get the mirrors to fold down this needs to be reversed (positive to white - negative to blue)

To do this you need a DPDT  dual pole dual throw switch in the car wired using this diagram

You will need to extend the blue and white wires and run them through the rubber wiring chanel from the door (easier said than done) to the position you choose in the car for the switch

I have the switch mounted in the ash tray and use the use a fused feed from the cigarette lighter wiring to power the switch .
